TYTHCOTT (Tithecott, Tythacot, and other spelling variants)

Alan Leng maintains an offline database of all UK births, marriages and deaths for TYTHCOTTs, TITHECOTTs, etc., since TYTHCOTT was the maiden name of his wife, Cecilia.

The material collected includes many census returns, parish records including baptisms, marriages and burials, and wills from the 1800s to date. Several other researchers have been contacted, and new enquirers can often be linked into an existing family tree. Make contact by e-mail here.

The surname TYTHCOTT or TITHECOTT (with various different spellings) comes from the area around Bideford and Barnstaple in North Devon. Whether the hamlet called Tithecot (near Buckland Brewer) got its name from the inhabitants or the inhabitants from the place name is not clear, but an early reference to a “de Tuddecot” goes back as far as the twelfth century.

Some TITHECOTTs moved from North Devon to South Wales in the nineteenth century, seeking work, and there is a cluster of families there now. Others moved to London and elsewhere, whilst some emigrated (mainly to North America), so that the name is found in Canada and the USA, but also in Australia and New Zealand.

Anyone interested in the name is invited to make contact here, to share research and information.
